A two-time breast-cancer survivor, Jan Hasak is listed on the National Cancer Survivors Day 2010 Speakers Bureau Roster

A retired patent attorney for Genentech, a leading biotechnology company, for over 20 years and an American Cancer Society (ACS) volunteer survivor, Jan has learned much information about breast cancer.

Jan has inspired a variety of audiences, including a core team of scientists and marketing people responsible for Herceptin, a drug she took that was developed and sold by Genentech. She fielded questions from the team as to how they could better serve patients. She has also participated in a panel discussion at her local public library to provide tips on writing. In addition, Jan has addressed members of a local fitness club with a focus on the importance of exercise to cancer survivors. Jan has shared her personal cancer journey with several cancer support groups in the regional area, with an emphasis on the therapeutic benefits of writing. At ACS events, Jan has emphasized the importance of volunteers to the lives of cancer survivors. In addition, she has spoken at church retreats, teas, and an ecumenical Ladies’ Nite Out event. She has shared tips at a church “caring ministries” group on how to ease the lives of cancer survivors.

Regarding her poetry, Jan has participated in an open-mike forum to share her cancer-inspired poetry with other poets in the community.

As a lymphedema patient-advocate for the National Lymphedema Network, Jan is equipped to speak about her experience as a lymphedema survivor and to inform audiences of the latest development in this important medical field. She attended the 2008 and 2010 International Lymphedema conferences for physicians and therapists and brought back knowledge to the community. She has also contacted her Congressman about the 2010 Lymphedema Treatment Act.

Jan spoke at the Healing Hearts Conference at Neighborhood Church in Chico, CA on February 20, 2010.  Over 100 women were present at her workshop about cancer thrivership.
