My 2012 Self: the graduate

I’m thrilled at the surge in new blog prompts spurred by the WEGO Health month-long challenge in April. This time, Jen from Keep The Calm has created the challenge, followed by Marie from JBBC. And a big thank-you to Renn, who started us off last week with a six-sentence blogging challenge.

The newest prompt in our blogosphere?

Post a photo or self portrait or other form of visual art (if you are not comfortable sharing your visage with us) of yourself that describes who you have been within the last six months.

I thought I’d be stumped by this one. But after taking an evening swim in the pool, I’ve come up with an idea. (I do my best thinking while I’m swimming.)

The photo I’ve chosen portrays me at my high school graduation party with my favorite aunt, for whom I was named.

Why a picture of the graduate? Well, it’s that time of year, isn’t it?

But I have a better reason. And it’s summed up in the words of Paul Freund:

At commencement you wear your square-shaped mortarboards.  My hope is that from time to time you will let your minds be bold, and wear sombreros.

In the last six months I have donned my sombrero. I’ve boldly salsa-danced my way into a new version of my former self. I’ve awakened from my siesta to take on new energy. Now, as when I was 17, I am single, a senorita freed from verbal chains that rattled me to the core.  Having graduated from that state of affairs, I’ve emerged in 2012 with fresh vistas of adventures to come.

I tip my tasseled cap to Jen for suggesting this prompt. It stirs emotions in me that were long dormant. Now I just need to rise to the occasion. And choose la buena vida, the good life. After all, commencement ceremonies have just begun.
