Welcome

Welcome to JanHasak.com!

The mission of this website is to help the general public learn more about breast cancer survivorship and living with lymphedema, and to raise awareness among health professionals, breast cancer survivors, and their caregivers of lymphedema risk reduction practices and treatment. The site is hosted by Jan Hasak, author of a memoir on breast cancer, Mourning Has Broken: Reflections on Surviving Cancer, and of a poetry book, The Pebble Path: Returning Home from a Forest of Shadows.

Various resources and lymphedema information are available at this site. Jan Hasak has also set up a blog on which comments are always welcome.

What’s New?

In October 2008, Jan was interviewed on KCHO radio in Chico, CA (91.7 FM), about her book “Mourning Has Broken.” To listen online, go to the Audio Archives on KCHO’s Web site and scroll down in the player to #41, “Jan Hasak.” Soon, Jan’s interview of August 26, 2010 about her new book “The Pebble Path” will be available at this site.

Jan’s new book, The Pebble Path: Returning Home from a Forest of Shadows, published by Outskirts Press, 2010, is available for ordering at Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, outskirtspress.com, the Pebble Path website in print or as an e-book, and brick-and-mortar bookstores!! It is specifically available at Lyon Books in Chico, CA, and at the Lighthouse on the Ridge in Paradise, CA.

The Pebble Path is an inspirational, Christian-themed allegory about her two bouts of breast cancer, interlaced with poems.  Specifically, the work relates the story of Fanciful, a princess, who meets and marries Farcical and picks up pebbles of wisdom as she travels down the path following her cancer diagnosis. Almost anyone whose life has been touched by cancer or who works in a cancer-related medical profession will see their situations reflected in this book.

Among the endorsements for the book:

In The Pebble Path, Jan Hasak gathers up the pebbles she left behind to mark her triumphant journey back home from a nightmare filled with fear, uncertainty, pain and loss. The author weaves together a courageous and unique healing story–part fairy tale, part prose–that will inspire and ring true for many breast cancer survivors. Nancy Richards, author of Heal and Forgive: Forgiveness in the Face of Abuse

The journey of cancer is a rocky road, but Jan Hasak manages to mark the way with her gems of poems. Any cancer patient will recognize the emotional turmoil and triumphs that Hasak elicits so skillfully with her poetry. In a world full of technical advice, Jan seeks to touch the soul – and she succeeds! The Pebble Path is an uplifting book for any stage of the journey. Teresa K. Matthews, breast cancer survivor and author of Cancer: The Adventure of Your Life

I loved reading the story.  Some of the poems touched me very deeply and made me cry.  As a professional I found the work an eye-opener, giving me insight into “things” patients deal with daily before, during and after chemo.  I will take what I have learned into my new practice. Elke Mowers, Family Nurse Practitioner at Enloe Regional Cancer Center (Chico, CA) and member, Oncology Nursing Society
